WE DESERVE A WELL-LED COUNTY GOVERNMENT

A well-led county government plans and prepares for the future. Its leaders, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), should work together and develop a vision for the county that supports the will of our citizens.

A highly functioning BOCC ensures that county department heads understand and share this vision and appropriately budget our limited resources to work toward achieving these shared goals. Any organization that is not continuously striving to move forward - to seek improvements and efficiencies - will begin moving backward.

Our county has seen marked improvement in many areas over the past several years. However, it appears that we are stagnating and, in some ways, fragmenting our efforts. This will eventually lead to decline-- Unless strong, dedicated, and cooperative leaders come together to address our citizens’ desires for the future of our county.

A COUNTY GOVERNMENT THAT APPROPRIATELY SERVES THE NEEDS OF OUR CITIZENS

As citizens, we rightfully expect a lot of our government. By statute, our county is responsible to do much for the people of Elbert County. Road & Bridge, Clerk & Recorder, Sheriff's Office, Public Health, Community Development and CSU Extension services are perhaps the ones we are most familiar with. Services we support directly through the taxes and fees we pay.

County services should be in a continuous state of review. We should always be asking three questions: (1) Are the services provided effective?, (2) Are the taxpayer dollars being used for them being spent efficiently?, and most importantly (3) Should they be the business of our county government at all? We should never be in the business of providing a service that another government entity is responsible for nor a service that can be better provided by the private sector.

As citizens, we must also responsibly and carefully consider the consequences of asking our county to provide greater services. Everything has a cost. We must ask ourselves, is it worth having this provided by our local government? Is it worth cuts in other areas, increases in taxes collected, and/or voluntarily restricting our individual freedoms for the benefit for which we ask?

ONE THAT ENSURES PUBLIC SAFETY WHILE PROTECTING PRIVATE FREEDOMS

Elbert County has a rich and varied history. We sit between the mining booms and cattle ranching of the “Old West” and the booming economy of new energy production and high tech development. Times have changed and so have the issues that affect our public safety and impact our private rights.

ONE THAT RESPONSIBLY SUPPORTS ECONOMIC GROWTH

Elbert County is a great place to raise children and it’s a wonderful place to retire. But, it is a difficult place to make a living, start a thriving business, or- depending on your location- spend your money.

We have to acknowledge there is constant tension in our county between preserving the rural nature of our area and allowing the growth and development needed to improve our economy. Ours is a big county. Larger than the state of Rhode Island. Obviously, there are areas that should be preserved for agricultural use. But, just as obviously, there are portions of the county where supporting reasonable growth makes perfect sense.

IN A MANNER THAT PROTECTS THE RESOURCES & CULTURE THAT MAKE OUR COUNTY UNIQUE

We are Elbert County. Ask 1,000 people exactly what defines our county and you aren’t likely to get two descriptions that match, but you will hear common themes. We are rural. We want to keep our wide-open spaces. We are independent. We expect good behavior and respect from others- and ourselves. We tolerate others doing their own thing as long as it doesn’t impact our ability to live as we choose. There was a time when these were common characteristics throughout Colorado. Unfortunately, places like Elbert County are becoming rarer. Rarer still are places like this found adjacent to major metro areas. It will take effort to preserve this.
